Although instagram is said to be a carefree and happy social networking site there have been social issues in the past where comments or photos have been removed due to harmful bullying or harassment. Just like many other social media applications and sites, there are things you can do like block and report issues and problems.
An issue that has come up on may 23rd 2014 was about how a woman in California who posted a photo of her size 16 body, as she wanted people to see all different bodies, not just skinny girls. She was proud of her body and after all there are many photos of skinner girls in bikinis that are acceptable. Instagram removed the photo she posted of herself citing “terms of use” violation. She made a complaint and they immediately restored her photo.
People use instagram to make other apps and put a price on it to make a profit, such as “buy your own followers” and “buy your own likes”. These are separate applications to Instagram but they allow people to gain followers or likes from accounts world wide. This is an econmic issue as people are earning profit from these applications which are connected to instagram but not actually authorised. Although there are mainly positives involving the environment, as instagram doesn’t use much energy and has a free usage for everyone to use. Instagram allows users to communicate issues from across the globe, helping to achieve a goal. For example, save the whales campaign or the RSPCA both have instagram accounts helping to overcome issues or improve issues. However, there are some negatives involving environmental issues including illegal posts from users, which get reported and removed as they are a violation. For example on May 23rd two Toronto high schoolers posted a trespassing video to instagram of themselves interacting with dangerous polar bears by sticking their fingers through the cages. It was reported to be a violation of property as they were specifically told not to go there at the zoo.
